Sync licensing simplified
A sync license gives you the right to use a song or music recording in visual media like films, advertisements, and TV shows.
Composition: A composition is the original music piece, including lyrics and melody. You need to license the composition for each synch use.
Publisher/Co-Publisher(s): Publishers represent compositions. A song may have one or several publishers (co-publishers). You need permission from all applicable publishers to use a composition in your project.
Master Recording: This is the actual recording of the song, typically owned by the record label. To use a specific recording, you need to license it from the record label and the composition from the publisher.
Media: Media refers to the platforms where your project will be seen (e.g., internet, TV, film festivals). The broader the media requested, the higher the license fee.
Territory: The territory is the geographic area where the license applies (e.g., worldwide, Europe, North America). The scope of territory affects the license fee.
Term: The term is the duration you intend to use the song/recording (e.g., 6 months, 5 years, perpetuity). Longer terms have higher fees.
Territory of Licensee: This is the country where your company is based (or where you reside as an individual). The licensee's location determines invoicing and fee payment.
Clear: Getting approval from publishers and record labels to use the song/recording in your project is called clearing the license.
